through the typical beautiful Sochi countryside you will finally
arrive in the very heart of the Caaucasian Mountains.
Krasnaya Polyana is situated 85 km away from the central part of
Sochi. It stands on the latitude of 600m above the sea level surrounded
by the mountain range. Krasnaya Polyana is a rare combination of
the magnificent mountains with their eternal snows and glaciers.
While it’s warm in Sochi, there’s snow up in the mountains.
The surrounding mountain ranges with the top heights of 3000m allure
you to go up higher. No matter what kind of person you are, an extreme
sport lover or not, you’ll find there something. Rich on different
kinds of animals, forests, mighty crags, narow ravines and expansive
glens, rush mountain rives and crystal-clear lakes, unusually fresh
air, mineral springs... Earthly paradise between the Black Sea and
the Main Caucasion Ridge.
A long time ago there were living highlanders. In the valley of
river  Mzimta
they had their settlement named Kbaade. One of the first Europeans,
who reached this place was baron Tornau. His descriptions were following:
“Along the both sides of the river there’s a number of houses and
huts, surrounded by the dark greenery of the gardens, vineyards,
the sowings of corn, nullet and fresh, velvety fields. As you move
away from the seacoast some buildigs and gardens change into age
– old forest, which borders the mountains”.
In the second half of the nineteenth century the name of the settlement
was changed and the inhabitants changed as well. Immigrants came,
mostly greeks and estonians. Noone knows exactly, why was the settlement
finally named Krasnaya Polyana (The Red Glade). Maybe because of
the natural beauty or because of the firm, which grows thickly all
over the place. The svidden changes for the better appeared in the
end of the nineteenth century. In 1898 the way, which connected
Krasnaya Polyana to the Black Sea coast, was built under the rule
of the engineer Konstantinov. This way made Krasnaya Polyana easy
for access; the comission, which visited Krasnaya Polyana gave some
recommendations of creating there a mountain resort.
 Among
those who firstly tried out the amenity of the future resort was
the emperor and some celebrities. 1901 on the slope of the mountain
Atchishho was built the royal shooting – box, which is extant now.
Soon were dachas of the general Dubasov and other famed and rich
people built. Doctor Chidzevsky created in Krasnaya Polyana a guest
– house for those, who has such illness as tuberculosis. The first
hotel in Krasnaya Polyana was opened in 1924. Time for the mountaneering
has come.
Since 1989 Sochi has countended for the right to lead the winter
Olimpic games, although those attempts weren’t successful the idia
of creating a powerful alpine base is becoming a reality.
Today hotels and alpine bases of Krasnaya Polyana are able to allocate
more than 1000 guests
and to offer them a varied range of variants to spend their free
time (not counting the tasting of the Caucasian honey and home –
wine, visiting russian banya and sauna).  Riding
and mountain cycling, floating and flying on paraplans and on the
baloons, fishing, visiting the Narzans outsprings, snowboarding
and skiing... Ski – tracks have different level of difficulty, the
general extent is 25 km. Skiers are taken over 1500m above the sea
level in flying chairs or by hilicopter. There are accomodation
facilities of different types and some very nice bars and restaurants.
Skiing is a growing sport in the Russian Federation and Sochi is
in a prime position to become the Number One Sport for skiers.
